How the events work

Guests typically enter palace grounds at 3 p.m., with the royal family arriving an hour later when a military band plays the national anthem. Attendees enjoy tea and cake while members of the family circulate among them in designated "lanes," allowing random presentations so many can meet a royal.

Recent and upcoming gatherings

This was the third garden party of the season and the third at Buckingham Palace in a week. The King and Queen hosted the first of the season on May 6, Kate Middleton and Prince William attended the second on May 8, and themed parties are scheduled at Buckingham Palace on May 14 and May 19. A further royal garden party is set for the Palace of Holyroodhouse on June 30. Earlier, Charles and Camilla held a garden event at the British Embassy in Washington in April for more than 600 guests, including Tom Daley and Sir Christian Turner.
