How They Met

Short, 76, says their first encounter happened in the 1980s after he appeared on David Letterman's show. He flew to L.A. to pick up the Three Amigos script at Martin's house, was struck by the impressive art and surroundings, and couldn't help wondering how Steve had amassed such wealth — a bemused observation that marked the start of their bond.

A Friendship That Lasts

The two co-starred in the 1986 film Three Amigos! and made a conscious choice not to drift apart after filming. Short recalls they went on to do dozens of shows a year under playful tour names and have toured together for years. Since 2021 they've also teamed up on Only Murders in the Building, which Martin co-created with John Hoffman and on which Short serves as an executive producer.
