In an unscheduled April 9 White House address, Melania rejected any friendship or close relationship with Epstein or Ghislaine Maxwell, saying overlaps in social circles are common and that she only had casual contact. She denied knowing about Epstein’s abuse and called the claims politically motivated smears aimed at damaging her name.

How she stacks up

Enten compared her numbers to modern first ladies, noting Melania’s negative rating contrasts with much higher marks for Nancy Reagan, Laura Bush, Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton at similar points in their spouses’ administrations. The poll was conducted over four days in late March, before her April statement.
